A New Nexus Phone and Android 4.2

We’ve seen several rumors pointing to a release this month of the next Google Nexus device, as well as an updated version of Android Jelly Bean: 4.2. Keep in mind, as usual, none of these reports are confirmed. But hey, where there’s smoke, there’s fire, right? If you’re considering buying a new Android device in the next 30-60 days, your best bet is to wait just a little longer.

Here’s what we think we know about the device so far -

  • The next Nexus device will be announced this month (October).
  • It will likely be made by LG, as a beefed up version of the LG Optimus G.
  • The specs for the Optimus G are as follows:
  • Snapdragon S4 Pro (quad-core 1.5ghz)
  • 2gb RAM
  • 4.7″ True HD IPS Display (1280 x 768)
  • 13MP Rear Camera
  • 32gb Built-in Storage
  • A possible announcement could come at the AllThingsD: Dive Into Mobile Conference Oct. 29-30.
  • It’ll likely be available for purchase as a GSM-unlocked device next month. No word yet on carrier-branded models.

As for Android, it looks like we’ll see the next iteration as part of Jelly Bean, incrementally known as Android 4.2.

Two things we do know for sure:

  • Google releases a new version of Android at least once a year.
  • Google releases a new Nexus device every year. (Nexus One: 2010, Nexus S: 2010/2011, Galaxy Nexus: 2011/2012)

The Nexus S was released in December 2010; the Galaxy Nexus was released in November 2011. If a new Nexus is announced at the end of this month and made available next month, that timing lines up closely with Google’s launch timing of previous years.

For all our Android fans: what do you hope to see in the next Nexus device? Any preferences on the manufacturer? Let me know on Twitter – @myz06vette.
