A program you need but never thought existed: PortableApps

Every once in a while you find a program that you need but you never thought it existed. Recently, I had the need to install Google Chrome on a computer that would not allow me to install any additional software.

As I began a search of how I could get Chrome to work on my computer, I came across PortableApps.com. Portable Apps is a program that you can install on a flash drive and then run on any PC without a need to install it on a hard drive. Then you are able to install other programs on the flash drive. There is a big list of different applications that you can install that will run perfectly on any flash drive with enough space.

To get my flash drive set up I had to first use a PC that allowed me to install applications. Once I downloaded the install file, I ran the install and selected my flash drive as the install location.  Once it has completely installed and it opens up you can then select the Apps icon and select Get More Apps… for a list of what apps you can download to the drive.

After installing Chrome and loading it up on a different computer, I then signed into Chrome so it pulled down all my extensions and bookmarks. After I had closed everything and removed my flash drive, the next time I used my portable Chrome eveything loaded back up exactly where I had left it. This show that the drive is active and that it is not just temporarily accessing your information.

You maybe able to find other uses for the PortableApps.com integration but now may be a good time to load up a flash drive so you already have you apps in hand when you need them.
