Apple just sent out press invitations for an event to be held one week from today, October 22, at Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. It starts at 10am PST / noon CST. It’s widely expected that we’ll see the introduction of new iPad models, just in time for the holidays.
As far as specific expectations, we should see a refresh of both iPad and iPad mini, the latter rumored to have a Retina display in tow for the first time. Also, both models will likely feature Touch ID, the fingerprint reader Apple debuted with the iPhone 5s last month, as well as new, updated color options to match. The black and slate color will surely be updated to space gray, while the white and silver model will remain. We’ve seen leaked photos indicating a champagne gold model could be in the works, so there could be that to look forward to if that’s your thing.
Lastly, we should see a comparable bump in hardware specs akin to the iPhone 5s: the 64-bit A7 chip, faster WiFi and improved LTE radios, and improvements to battery life. Since this second-generation iPad mini will be the first to sport a Retina display, we expect it’ll be marginally thicker and heavier, just like the iPad 3 was to the iPad 2.
While all of this remains speculation, we’ll know in just 7 days time. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
