Imagine that you just moved to live downtown in a big city. You’re unfamiliar with where things are but you are anxious to explore and find some favorite places to eat and shop as well as a dry cleaner, grocery store, etc. In a large city, how do you remember all of the places that you see that you want to try or go back to? It’s a bit overwhelming to keep a running list on the Notes App or random sticky notes tacked to your fridge or stuffed inside your wallet…
Luckily, there’s an app for that. Matchbook for iPhone (coming soon to Android and Blackberry) is a free app specifically designed to bookmark places. Named for the long practiced tradition of collecting matchbooks from favorite bars or restaurants, the app is easy to use with a sleek and clean layout.

On the home screen, Matchbook prompts you to enter a place name after it has accessed and synced with your current location. Or, hit the “I’m Walking By It” button for a list of places near you now. Once you find the location you wish to save, bookmark it or share it with others through Facebook or text message.
Your bookmarks are then saved on a map and in a list format organized by neighborhood. You are also able to search your bookmarks or others’ based on what tags certain locations have been given based on atmosphere, location, features, food, drinks or your custom tag.
You can also add notes to your specific bookmarked locations to help you remember why you may have saved certain things. Did someone in your new city mention that that café on the corner was a great place to network and meet new people? Is that bar across the street from the office a perfect place to meet for drinks with clients? Remember everything by making a note.
For even more access to Matchbook, register using the app and install the Matchbook bookmarklet on your browser’s bookmark bar – anything you come across on your computer and want to also be able to get to on the app will be automatically saved.
