Laptops and tablets have changed the way we learn, but for me, when it comes to taking notes there’s nothing like doing it with good old fashioned pen and paper. Personally, I need the freedom to draw arrows, write in the margins, star items, highlight, and do it all quickly without fussing with technology. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but it works best for me. In this brilliant day and age though, even simple pen and paper can be technologically enhanced and improved.
A company called LiveScribe has developed the Echo Smartpen that takes jotting down notes to a whole new level. When used in conjunction with special LiveScribe paper, the Echo Smartpen will record everything you say, hear, and write. It will link the audio recordings to your written notes, so all you have to do is tap the pen at a certain point in your notes to hear what the audio was at that moment in time. Then, using the LiveScribe software provided as part of the starter package, you can save both your notes and recordings to your computer, therefore making them easily searchable and easy to share with others electronically.
The Echo Smartpen comes in a 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB version and starts at about $100. If you’re the type that needs the freedom of pen and paper, but the organization provided by technology, it just might be worth the investment.
