Enter LIMBO

When the Apple App Store launched, there were 500 third-party applications available for download. Such humble beginnings. Now, just over five years later, there’s an app for just about everything. Apps to help you be more productive. Apps to help you get fit. And, of course, apps for wasting time, i.e., gaming apps. Not all of them are great. Actually, most of them aren’t even good. With well over a million apps in the App Store to choose from, most are never even downloaded.

So what happens when a game app has its own one minute trailer online, its own website, and a full-page ad in the August 2013 edition of Wired magazine (which, according to their media kit, costs $125,327 to place just once)? Playdead, an independent game developer and publisher based in Copenhagen, Denmark, is about to find out. On July 7, the company released an iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch version of LIMBO (also available for PS3, XBOX 360, PC, and Mac). It is currently the company’s first and only game offering.

The game is relatively spendy (in terms of iPhone/iPad apps) at $4.99, but even so, in the two and a half weeks since its release, it has already amassed an average rating of four stars in the App Store with more than 2,000 reviews. So, is it worth it? I plan on finding out and letting you know—no use in you blowing five bucks when I can do it instead, right? Right.

But, if the trailer gets you excited and you do want to download the app from iTunes [iPhone Link] [iPad Link], I have one note of caution: while the requirements for the game in the information section of the details page say the game is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and several versions of iTouch, a note at the top says it requires at least an iPad 2, iPhone 4S, or iTouch (5th gen). Not exactly a small detail.
