Let’s just hope it’s bigger than the “something awesome” that let us down earlier this summer.
The overhaul will allegedly be announced at the f8 event on September 22.
Possible updates:
- Facebook app store
- Redesigned profiles. “Sticky” is the only hint we have… supposedly it will help people linger on profiles longer.
- A Facebook music service
- Updates to Facebook credits
Why the overhaul is needed
Clutter
There’s a lot of clutter. There’s a lot of junk to manage, and that is always a challenge. Apps, lists, pages, photos, friends, ads… that’s a lot of stuff to manage.
Technology constantly changes
Facebook was invented before the mobile revolution that came with the iPhone. Design-wise, Facebook is
Is Change Enough?
Has Facebook become stagnant? Do they lack the change?
I don’t think so. It seems like Facebook makes changes often enough. It feels like they’ve made a lot of those recently, possibly in response to Google+.
For example, they’ve made multiple changes to the chat system alone in the past few months.
They added new privacy and sharing features (inspired by Google+).
… but are they the right changes?
In some instances, the changes can actually be frustrating. Here’s one small example: I was one of the few people who had actually already organized lists for friends. Now I can’t invite friends to events using my custom-made lists. Facebook now only shows certain lists.
Here’s a funny comic about the chat system.
A lot of people made complaints about the changes to chat mentioned earlier. Thankfully, one man came up with a way to Fix Facebook’s Broken Chat System.
Hopefully this change will make Facebook more smooth and consistent, instead of being just another random change saying “Hey, look what I can do now!”.
