You will then be able to zoom in or out. Any area will be saved to your phone. Of course, the larger the area, the more storage space you’ll need.

It’s almost exactly the same with Android, only instead of clicking the small icon, you just click on the search bar and scroll down past your history.

I’m very excited that this is now an available feature, but unfortunately there are still some things missing. Downloading the map will only allow you to see it and zoom in or out to get street names, even if you don’t have service. Unfortunately, you will not be able to get turn by turn directions or search within the given area for attractions or addresses. On top of that, maps are only saved for 30 days. So if you download a map that you want to use indefinitely, then you’ll need to re download each month.

If you are going on a trip to another country where you don’t have service, then you will absolutely want to download maps of certain cities or towns that you will be visiting.

I’m a wanderer with no sense of direction. So, in general, I probably rely on Google Maps more than the average Joe. Even though I live in New York and don’t drive anywhere. I’ve decided to download a map of Brooklyn, because I just can’t go down there without getting completely lost.

As always, I am hoping that this is just the first of many updates from Google. I’m hoping that turn by turn directions and searching within our saved maps is in the works.
