I’m Confused As To How Some YouTube Videos Get So Popular

Why are they so popular? There have to be at least a thousand videos on YouTube of a cat chasing a laser point around the room, making weird noises or lip synching a song. One of the most popular cats on YouTube is the Nyan Cat. It’s a cartoon cat with a pop tart body flying through space with a rainbow trailing behind it and it was the 5th most viewed video on YouTube in 2011. The reason I’m confused is that I don’t know why exactly this video was so popular. The only reason I watched it was because I wanted to see if the cat was going anywhere. I wanted to see where it would end up….But, nothing happened. It was a waste of my time to see a cat flying through space for ten minutes. I guess I shouldn’t expect any better. Stupid and random things are pretty popular on YouTube… Remember the sneezing panda? Remember the Numa Numa guy? Of course you do! They’re completely weird and random. The point I’m trying to make is that people WANT to see something weird. They want to see something they haven’t seen before and YouTube is the perfect place to find things that are out of the ordinary.

What do you think makes a YouTube video popular?  Is it the weirder and stupider, the better?  Why aren’t genuinely cool videos more popular than all the weird ones?  Feel free to input your opinion below.
