iPhone 5 Rumor Mill: Keypad? Yes Please!

So I could probably fill a month’s worth of blogs on the different rumors circulating around the changes with the iPhone 5. One of the rumors that is consistently showing up though is the presence of a full physical keyboard. More specifically, a physical keypad of the slide-out variety. I absolutely love the iPhone, but my one dislike has always been the lack of a keypad. Thus, the rumor of a full keypad rocks my socks.

Thinking about it though, I’m not sure if I can fully adjust to the idea of an iPhone with a slide-out keypad. The iPhone in my mind has always been a wonderfully sleek and modern piece of technology. I wonder what a slide-out keypad would do to this image though. While a keypad would be hugely functional, I think it would take away from the “aura” of the phone. Slide-out keypads always seem to be somewhat clunky and can carry with them a wealth of potential problems. We all know how emphatic iPhone users are about any slight issue with their phones, so a slide-out keypad seems downright terrifying in this respect.

After much thought on my part though, I decided that I would like a slide-out keypad. I trust Apple’s ability to add features without taking away the persona of their products.  Thus, I hope that the sliding keypad will be no different. Unfortunately, the addition of a slide-out keypad would open up a whole new realm of problems for me. I would have to consider if I should wait the agonizing months between when my contract is up until the iPhone 5 comes out. I know I live a tough life considering that this would be one of the more difficult decisions I face. So, bring on the full keypad Apple, I’ve got a couple months left to ponder my next move.

What are your thoughts on a full keypad? Would it be nicer, or do you like the current setup?

Personally I’d like a case that an iPhone and/or iPod touch could slide into to dock physically instead of using bluetooth with a slider keyboard and also have an extended battery built into the unit.

You have got to be kidding about the micro USB !!! Go ahead and just get yourself a droid dude that is the best part about the phone is that it doesn’t have that piece of sh*t charger that is always messing up !!!! Please Apple do not ever change that feature !

  • Scarymon

Never going to happen. I find typing on physical keyboards slow anyway.

    • ZMAN

Ya I agree myself but a lot of people say they can type faster on keyboards so I guess different strokes for different folks

Depends what you’re comparing too. iPhone doesn’t have Swype so yea, a physical keyboard is going to be faster than the virtual keyboard.

  • ONESLYONE

    Looks like a step backwards.

    • BALLER123

LOOKS LIKE STEPS FORWARD COME ON APPLE PUT ON A KEYBOARD

  • ZMAN

Hmm well I would have to say seeing is believing so I would much rather see it before making my decision but what I was think was that apple is on the cutting edge of everything and so the could most likely change the whole persona of the bulky keyboard stigma which that is why I do not like keyboulards and I love the iPhone but they could transform that whole idea of the keyboard ! I would just have to see it first !!

If you want a physical keyboard, there are plenty of choices other than an Iphone – while the virtual keyboard isn’t every going to be for touch-typing, it suits the purpose it was designed. I have a harder time typing on the physical keyboards because of their diminutive size – call it large thumb syndrome – but my vote skip the keyboard

I decided to stay with my Motorola Droid 2 when Verizon introduced its iPhone. I can’t imagine using a phone without a slide out keypad. I’m no good at all on a virtual keypad but do a pretty good job on my slide out keypad.

If when you refer to iPhone users as “emphatic” you really mean “borderline psychotic and maniacal”, then yes, I’d agree with that. The virtual keyboard/pad has been one of only two things I ever bitched about on my iPhone 3GS, the other being lack of Flash. So, if iPhone5 were to sport a slick Apple-crafted take on the slide-out keyboard/pad, I would happily skip iPhone4 to wait for it.

So, anybody think iPhone5 will have Flash support (assuming Steve dies before Apple begins production)?

  • Daniel

If you watched the first iPhone keynote/introduction you knew it will never happen to an iPhone. Thank God!
