The rumors are out, and it looks like Twitter is planning to launch its own photo-sharing service. Twitter has been working to expand it app, and the photo-sharing is just one step in the company’s progress. According to an article from TechCrunch, Twitter plans to make the launch sometime this week.
You may be wondering why it’s a big deal that Twitter will have it own photo-sharing service. I mean, users can already share photos via Twitpic and Yfrog, but the new built-in service would have a major advantage against competing apps.
According to the same TechCrunch article, the new service shouldn’t be a shock to anyone, “as photosharing is the next logical step of Twitter expanding its in app experience.”
Twitter doesn’t seem to mind throwing money around though. The company recently spent $40 million on the power user client Tweetdeck – which is 13% of its userbase. TechCrunch says that it only seems natural they that would also be more than willing to spend more money and resources on photo-sharing, “especially considering how much money is being poured into the white hot space”, and that images were what made the Facebook competitor so successful.
But rumors are just that; rumors. According to Mashable, Twitter announced its purchase of Tweetdeck after it asked developers to stop building third-party clients. But it ended up taking months for those rumors to be confirmed; so we may be hearing the new rumors for months as well before Twitter makes any official statement. But who knows, maybe these rumors will be confirmed faster; one can hope anyway.
