Convincing someone that they need to pay for a smartphone plan is not always the easiest thing to to. They either may not see the need of all the extra apps, or simply paying the data and texting plan does not fit in their budget.
Republic Wireless is working to build a system that provides the benefits of using a smartphone but won’t take a chunk out of wallet each month. It many cases it may even be cheaper than your cell phone plan you have now. Currently the system is in beta but they are working hard to bring the service to the general population very soon.
They have come up with a strategy that uses Wi-Fi to provide high power data downloads as well a way to connect to cellular networks for when you are out and about. They claim that most people are on Wi-Fi about 60% of the time. This could be at home, at work, and even in free Wi-Fi locations. Connecting the phone with Wi-Fi allows them to run calls and all data through your Wi-Fi instead of putting strain on a cellular network. This drops the price of the overall plan and then you are really only paying $19 dollars a month to roam on other networks.
How it works
When you sign up for the phone plan by buying a $200 Android phone. You then pay a monthly fee of $19 for unlimited data, texting, and calling. There is not contract and also no overages. When they release a new phone you can upgrade by just buying the phone new phone. This sounds truly like a no hassle plan that can save us all a few bucks.
They are tracking their progress by milestones on their website. They plan to open up beta in a few months to test out the new phone as well as more customers.
This type of plan might finally get my mom drop her flip phone and start texting like the good mother that she is.
