Review: Plants Vs Zombies 2: “It’s About Time”

A few months ago, I posted about my excitement over Popcap’s release of Plants Vs Zombies 2. Well, it’s here and it was worth the wait. The tag line “It’s About Time” has a double meaning. We’ve had to wait over 4 years for Popcap to release PvZ 2 and the game really is about time. Your goal: Help Crazy Dave travel back in time to before when he eats a tasty taco, just so he can eat it again. The problem: You travel too far back in time and have to work through the ages to get to the taco. You visit Ancient Egypt, Pirate Times, and The Wild West, all riddled with zombies.

The gameplay doesn’t vary from the original Plants Vs Zombies, but there are some added plants and features. You must create a defense using plants, from a “pea shooter” to a watermelon catapult, in order to defend your own brains. You collect keys and stars through out each level to unlock various portions of the level, as well as new plants to help your defense. You collect coins and diamonds throughout the game that allow you to pay for god-like powers allowing you to flick, zap, or pinch your foe. Also, you can earn plant food giving each plant a unique, but temporary super power.

And then there’s the in-app purchasing. A lot of favorite plants are only available if you drop real money on them. Buying them may speed up your progress through levels, but they’re not necessary to beat the game. This is a bit of a turn off for me, but in-app purchasing options are becoming more and more the norm. I guess I had better get used to it.

To sum things up, the game is fun, addicting, and well worth the download. Good luck on your quest to get Crazy Dave to his taco.
