Socialcam makes a big splash – 3 million users in a weekend

You know, now that Instagram had it’s big exit, we’re going to hear ‘it’s Instagram for _‘ more times than any of us can stand. I’m going to write this whole post and try to avoid that phrase.

Instagram really has been a phenomenal app. What Instagram did for personal photo sharing, we likely need for videos. A simple way to share them socially along with filters to make them more exciting.

Enter SocialCam

Socialcam — which is available for iOS — is riding the wave of interest in video apps, and its founders took to Hacker News to reveal that the service attracted 4 million new users over the last weekend alone.

No doubt, 4 million new users in a weekend is impressive. It’s especially when a big company like Viddy has been touting numbers only slightly less impressive.

They’ll face Viddy

Specifics aren’t available for Viddy or Socialcam’s user bases. Although they are both growing quickly, it would seem likely that Viddy has the larger overall community. You can be sure that neither team will give up.

This might turn into a bloody battle where one ends up like Facebook, and the other MySpace. I didn’t say I wouldn’t bring up MySpace.

Creating and Sharing

Let’s not forget that for almost everyone but the team at Socialcam, it’s about the user experience – not the user base and venture capital valuation.

In the end, you and I will use a video app that allows us to use filters and share our creations via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, email even MMS – which Socialcam will take care of.

As the communities grow, however, one app will win. After all, friends will want to browse, watch and comment on your videos, and you on theirs. You might want to confirm with them which app they’re going to download.
