With the beta of Apple’s iOS 6 now in the hands of developers, news of changes to iTunes has begun to circulate around the web. It seems the iTunes app in iOS 6 is missing any reference to the Podcasts, iTunes U, and Audiobooks categories. Currently, in iOS 5, those categories can be accessed through the ‘More’ tab at the bottom of the screen.
There are a few possible explanations for the lack of these categories in the iTunes app.
1. They simply haven’t been added yet, since iOS 6 is still in beta. While that is certainly possible, it does seem like a pretty big oversight for that to be the explanation.
2. All of these categories are being dumped. Apple, through iTunes, has been behind Podcasts from the beginning and is where most people, including me, subscribe and download them from. With the popularity of these categories, dropping them completely is very unlikely.
3. These categories will receive their own dedicated app. There already is an iTunes U app available, so that category will likely be moving to it completely with the launch of iOS 6. For podcasts and audiobooks, it seems Apple will be giving them a dedicated app to allow users to manage them more easily instead of feeling like an afterthought in the ‘More’ section of iTunes. The layout of the desktop version of iTunes will likely remain unchanged; this is just for the iOS version. I hope this news is true, managing podcasts from my iPhone currently is too much of a hassle, I do it completely through the desktop, so it would be nice to get more functionality through a dedicated app.
