‘The Daily’ on App Store shelves everywhere

Earlier this week, Rupert Murdoch, the the media maven from ‘down under’ met with a handful of reporters willing to brave the New York weather to announce ‘The Daily,’ an iPad specific news publication. Living true to its name, the app will be updated “daily” with content that features ‘a little bit of wit, a little bit of attitude.’

‘The Daily’ is unique due to the fact that it is a news subscription that is built specifically for the iPad from the ground up. Murdoch mentioned that the app would be exclusive to the device for the time being as “the iPad belongs to last year, this year, and next year,” but the publication would eventually be on all tablets.

The app seems to do a good job of harnessing the media presentation attributes of Apple’s popular device by featuring 360-degree images, HD video, as well as the usual handful of social media sharing opportunities.

“We want to design and think about how we create content for people that are going to spend time with this device,” said Jesse Angelo, the Editor-in-Chief of ‘The Daily,’ “… I mean the usage time per session are 35 minute, 40 minutes, 45 minutes, that’s unbelievable. People spend time with their iPads.”

One note that many laymen to the tech world may not pick up on was the subtle mentioning of subscription services within the iPad app. This has been a request to Apple by many publications as a successful model simply hasn’t been found within the walled garden of the App Store. Apple’s Eddy Cue, who was present at the event, put all at ease by saying that the service with ‘The Daily’ would be available immediately with an announcement for other publishers “soon.”
