Many are outraged about the exclusion of Google Maps from iOS 6 and on the just-released iPhone 5. While we’ve heard rumors of Google releasing a native version of the app for iOS users, no such app has materialized yet. In the meantime, if Apple’s Maps app has you down, get your Google Maps on again with this next-best solution.
- Open Safari and navigate to http://maps.google.com.
- Tap the Share icon (very middle button) on the bottom navigation bar.
- Choose ‘Add to Home Screen’ and confirm the name for your shortcut as ‘Google Maps’.
- Safari will exit to the home screen and you’ll see your new Google Maps icon.
Keep in mind, this is just a shortcut to Google maps running in your browser. It isn’t as smooth and comfortable as the native app we came to love for the last five generations of iOS. However, if the iOS 6 maps app lets you down, this is your next best bet until Google releases a native app again. Who wants to bet what usage on iOS 6 Maps will do once that happens? Something like this, I’m guess.
What’s your experience with iOS 6 Maps so far? Love it? Hate it? Indifferent to it? Let me know on Twitter.
