Ever had that one friend on Facebook who deliberately goes out of their way to chat you every time you sign on? Has it ever gotten to the point where you have to go offline just so they won’t bombard you with useless nonsense and unwanted chatter? Well fear no more, there is a solution to this surprisingly common problem! Facebook thankfully has the option for advanced settings making avoidance easier than ever.
To start off with (if you are trying to be efficient that is) create a list of people you don’t want to chat with. You can do this by clicking on the “More” link next to “Lists” on the left side of the screen from your homepage. From there, hit “Create List” at the top right. It is fairly self-explanatory, but make sure to give your list a title and save it once you have added everyone.
Next, go to the bottom right of your screen and click the cog for your Facebook Chat. Click “Advanced Settings” from the drop-down bar and select which privacy option you want. You can choose to appear completely offline, or offline to certain people by adding in a specific list or individual name. You can also flip the situation around and appear online to selected people.
Managing the chat setting once you are online is pretty easy as well. You can always change your online status while signed into chat by clicking on the person’s name, hitting the cog menu and selecting “Go Offline to [Name].” So whether you want to chat in secret from you nosy mother, hide from your annoying co-worker or appear to be online
