Watch Star Wars IV: A New Hope On Your Mac (or PC) In Text Animation

This may be old news to some, but hopefully new news to many. I myself found out about this years ago, but forgot about it again until a co-worker reminded me. Did you know you can watch Star Wars IV: A New Hope on your Mac, right now for free? Here’s the catch: it is entirely in ASCII art. Yes, that is right, word for word, frame by frame, you can watch over 18 minutes of the movie. It is simply amazing. Here’s how you do it:

1. Open Terminal (the quickest way is to press Command+Space bar, then type in terminal and press return. Please note, this is a sketchy place to be if you don’t know what you’re doing, so tread lightly)

2. Type or paste the following: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

3. Patiently wait.

4. Star Wars on your computer!

It’s pretty great that someone put this together…and had this much time on their hands.

Want to watch it on your Windows PC instead? Here is a link to explaining exactly how to. If you don’t have the patience and want Star Wars ASCII NOW, feel free to watch the whole thing on the creator’s website, asciimation.co.nz.
