Some updates make a single feature better. Some updates make one feature so useful that another seems worse.
Searching for Info
When we first got these large screen (iPhone) type smartphones, the ability to search for something on the web, while we were mobile was amazing. You could search Google on your phone for anything you could search for on your desktop. For the most part the experience was impressive.
The next step was Siri. We all got a hint of what she could do when she would look up questions for us off the cuff ‘How many feet in a mile?’, ‘How far is it to Boston?’.
With the latest updates, Siri takes quite a bite out of the search engine business.
Sports: Schedules, Scores and More
Siri has picked up the ability to answer questions about team schedules and standings like: ‘When do the Utah Jazz play the Lakers?’ Little searches for things like game scores, player stats, and team records are all right on the tip of Siri’s tongue. You just have to ask her.
Movies: Showtime, Trailers and Reviews
When you need to know when a movie is playing, or watch a trailer, is the first place you go Google? I’m telling you that if you have an iPhone, you may be itching to ask Siri instead with iOS 6.
It’s not just trailers and showtimes, Siri has detailed information about the entertainment industry:
Siri is also quite the film buff: Find out when a film premiered, who directed it, and what awards it won. Or ask Siri which movies your favorite actors star in, so you won’t miss any of their past or future blockbusters.
At Your Fingertips
Sports and movies aren’t the only information Siri added to her database. She’s picked up a few other tidbits of information that I’ve mentioned in other posts. These things, along with a future growth path, combine to show what Siri can really do as she learns. Apple is probably looking at the data and seeing what things are most asked of Siri, and building out those features first. Siri really does know what we want.
Search engines made it easy for us to find information at the drop of a hat. We all became addicted to having information right at our fingertips. It’s getting even better.
Siri doesn’t make it easy for us to find things. Siri makes it easy by finding things for us. This is the future of search.
